To learn more about Eczema and Dermatitis: The Skin Barrier, and how Staph. auerus infection can affect Atopic Dermatitis, you can
read this article.

When the skin barrier is broken, this allows other micro-organisms such as bacteria (Staph. auerus), fungi (Candida Albicans) and viruses ( Herpes or Molluscum) to invade the body and cause an infection. It is crucial that topical steroids are never applied on open, broken or infected skin, as this increases absorption and also increases the risk of other microbial infections. Side-effects of topical steroids include delayed wound healing, masking and aggravating fungal infections, aggravating existing bacterial infections and causing skin thinning by affecting collagen production.

Here are some tips and suggestions when dealing with a secondary bacterial infection on top of an eczema flare up.

Topical steroids are effective and safe to use in the short-term, but may have more side-effects than benefits if used incorrectly, over a long period of time, or when applied to skin that is very thin such as around the eyes, lips, genital areas and on very young babies and children, for a prolonged period of time, as the absorption increases.

Always follow medical advice and consult your Doctor if symptoms do not improve.
